The Worst - The Worst

After days of trouble on acessing blogger, finally I come back to close the year properly. Formed somewhere between the late 80s / early 90s in Vancouver, Canada, the sound of these guys is very cool, something between the purism of early Chesterfield Kings and the Fiends' rawness (actually, their singer was also the Fiends'). The band has good songwriters, as seen in tracks like Get That Thing, Lucky Girl and Telling You True. As far as I'm concerned, they released a demo before that album, a few EPs, a last LP and broke up, but any extra info on the band would be very welcome.

  1. Little White Lies
  2. Stop Wasting my Time
  3. Telling you True
  4. Afraid of the Dark

VA - These Cats Ain't Nothing But Trash!

Destaque pra Before the Night Is Through e Please Don't Tell my Baby (Milkshakes), I Want my Woman, Dinosaurs e a versão insana de Hidden Charms (do genial Willie Dixon) pelos Sting-Rays e as 4 faixas dos Cannibals, uma grata surpresa pra mim.

----

I couldn't found bigger info about the comp, except that it's been released in 1983 by Big Beat Records. I don't know about you, but any Big Beat release with Milkshakes tracks in it has already proved itself worth a listen to me, specially when you have the Sting-Rays and their garage-billy (sorry, I have no better name for their sound) and the Cannibals, who play an excellent garage rock with a bit of psychobilly here and there, who were unknown to me till I found this record. Highlights go to Before the Night is Over and Please Don't Tell my Baby (by the Milkshakes), I Want my Woman, Dinosaurs and the insane version of Hidden Charms by the Sting-Rays and the 4 Cannibals tracks, a grateful surprise to me.

  1. The Milkshakes - Before the Night is Over
  2. The Milkshakes - Nothing Said
  3. The Milkshakes - Please Don't Tell my Baby
  4. The Milkshakes - It's Gonna Be
  5. The Sting-Rays - I Want my Woman
  6. The Sting-Rays - The Cat
  7. The Sting-Rays - Hidden Charms

Have You the Nerve to Face the Woody Peakers

------

Formed in 1986 in Italy, the Woody Peakers do an extremely fuzzy and lo-fi sound, full of crazy organ riffs here and there. Apparently, this album was recorded in the garage they used to rehearse in a 4-track recorder, but despite the raw (or absent) production, the album isn't a let downer, in it's covers, like Writing on the Wall (one of my fav songs, here played faster than usual) or It's a Cryin Shame, with their own material like Shake my Colors, the band shows what they're here for and won't disappoint, even playing slower stuff like Bad Song or the cover to Message to a Pretty, reassuring Italy as a craddle of forgotten wonders to garage revival.

1.It's a crying shame
2.Firestone
3.She's going on
4.Ricordarmi
5.Bad song
6.Shake my colours'88

Jerry Lee Lewis - Live at the Star Club, Hamburg

---

The Killer needs no introduction, and few albums in history have so much energy and sheer insanity as this one. With his career at the lowest point, due to a number of scandals and the start of the british invasion, the man is pissed as he can in this album. The support band, the Nasvhile Teens, can barely keep up with Jerry Lee, that speed up EVERY song, turning even the country standard "Your Cheatin' Heart" in aq mean'n nasty boogie. I had the oportunity to see the legend a few months ago and, while he's not in his 20s climbing the piano anymore, you can see it in his eyes : If there was ever someone to be named the king of the first wave of Rock'n'roll, this man is Jerry Lee Lewis, and none of his problems or personal shit can change that. Download this, it's pure rock'n'roll as it should be, an album to be side by side with Live at Leeds or the first James Brown live at the Apollo.

2. High School Confidential
3. Money (That's What I Want)

The Real Kids - The Real Kids

Formed in 1972 by John Felice, ex-guitarist of the equally fabulous Modern Loves, the sound of the Real Kids stays between the Ramones and the Flamin' Groovies, powerpop / punk rock of the highest quality. Their debut album was released in 1978, and despite the poor sales, it's now regarded as a (justified classic). From the rockabilly of All Kindsa Girls to the nearly MC5 Reggae Reggae, there's not letdown in this album, with highlights going to the above mentioned tracks, the punk boogie of Do the Boob and the excellent cover of My Way, by Eddie Cochran (an underrated classic). In times of coloured trousers and synthethizers, it's always nice to remember what's REAL powerpop.
